One evening as I was getting ready to go out to dinner with my husband, I began to feel a pain in one of my back teeth. In the past I had frequently had problems with my teeth and with gum disease. The pain quickly worsened, and I began fearing that I would need to go to a dentist and undergo another root canal. I had spent thousands of dollars on dental work, each time thinking that if I got "this one" fixed, I would have no more problems. After each experience, I would vow to take better care of my teeth.
As a Christian Scientist, I knew that prayer could heal this problem, but I had felt I did not have the necessary experience to deal with it.
Sitting and thinking about how I was going to deal with this, I resolved this time to turn wholeheartedly to Christian Science. I picked up the telephone and called a practitioner, explaining the situation to her. She talked about the true identity of man, as discussed in Science and Health: "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God" (p. 475). She agreed to help me in finding healing, and encouraged me to ponder the spiritual idea of man, knowing that as God's ideas we were never actually born into matter and have never lived in matter.
