The intelligence we need for today's world
Recently our Editors were discussing current events and trends of thought with Editors from The Christian Science Monitor. One of the points that the conversation brought out is the underlying insecurity many people feel today about what the future holds for both them and their families. Will they be able to make their way in such a fast-paced, increasingly complex, and technologically centered world? It was noted how some analysts argue that it is the "smart" people who will survive the rapid changes in society, while large numbers of those who aren't at the upper levels of intelligence will likely find themselves in serious trouble.
Yet what does it mean to have "enough" intelligence, and where do we find the capacity we need, not only to make our way but to have lives of genuine purpose, lives that make a difference and actually count for something?
The whole supposition of limited intelligence is one of the most disheartening lies placed on the shoulders of humanity. People are categorized and even ostracized merely on the basis of material measures of intelligence. People are given broad opportunities or at times denied even basic rights on the basis of these same material measures of intelligence. And people subsequently carry with them the equally harmful opinions of themselves as "superior" or "inferior" human beings according to material measures of intelligence. Yet the law of God, Christian Science, indicates the way to break free from the devastating influence of believing in such limited views of intelligence.
