While in my sophomore year at college, I was required to take a course in Western civilization. The professor lectured that civilization really began with Abraham's worship of one God. He then traced the history of the mainstream religions down to the lesser-known ones.

When we came to Christian Science, he mentioned that it presents God as a healing power. That was all he said; if we wanted to learn more about it, he suggested we do some research on our own. That was the last class of the morning. At lunch some of the students from the class discussed what our teacher had said. Nobody had ever heard of Christian Science.

At that time I had an executive position after school that helped pay my way through college. It required late hours and carried much responsibility. I didn't get much rest. One day soon after this my back and legs gave me much pain—so much so that I went to a doctor. He prescribed some medicine, which did not help. He suggested physical therapy, but that didn't help either. I sought a second opinion from another doctor, who prescribed a strict diet. After a few weeks I asked him what the alternative was. He recommended an operation on the sciatic nerve in my back, but warned me that it might leave me crippled for life.
