In 1992 a friend and teacher at the prison where I'm serving a life sentence gave me Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. I took it to my cell and began reading.
At first much of what I read confused me. But somewhere along the way, things began to make sense. When I would come across something that really puzzled me, I'd go back to my friend. And studying this book along with the Bible, I noticed a difference—a calm in my life that I had never felt before.
Much of my childhood had been spent in reform schools, and I ended up killing a policeman during a bank robbery. Prior to that I had accomplished nothing in my life, other than attaining a reputation as a dangerous young man. That reputation followed me into prison, and at first I lived up to those expectations so as not to let my ego or my friends down.
