Last year I was boiling a mixture of sugar and butter to make some Christmas candy. I thought I could alter the recipe to make chocolate candy, but completely ignored some of the basic rules of physics I had been taught at college; I poured a mixture of chocolate and water directly into boiling sugar, and caused a miniature volcano in the pan.

The sugar erupted over the pan, cooker, floor, and one of my hands. I cried out it pain, but then realised that my wife had left the house to do some shopping and that I was completely alone.

The previous day I had been preparing some readings from the Bible and Science and Health for a church activity, and part of the following statement came readily to my thought: "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not" (p. 495). Within a few minutes of considering and obeying these commands, I was completely free of pain.
