Going deeper

Many years ago I saw a sign hanging in someone's office that read: If you stand still, you'll fall behind.

I was reminded of that message the other day when I came across a copy of a letter from a woman in the Dominican Republic, a Peace Corps volunteer, who had no intention of standing still in her life. She wrote to say that she had recently heard the Sunday morning service of The Mother Church, which is broadcast weekly on shortwave radio. Up to that point she had been feeling "particularly lonely and almost alienated from everything familiar." After hearing about Christian Science through these broadcasts, she wanted to know if we would help her obtain the book Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, so that she could learn more about Christian Science. Of course we were delighted to help.

This was someone who was striving to find answers, and who was willing to break new ground—to go deeper—to do so. In one sense, that describes the experience of Simon Peter right after he and some other fishermen returned from an uneventful night of fishing. According to Luke's Gospel, Christ Jesus said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught." Simon explained to Jesus what he likely knew already, that they had just returned from fishing and had caught nothing. "Nevertheless," Simon added, "at thy word I will let down the net."
