Even though I have been a student of Christian Science for only three years, this testimony is still overdue. I've had much inspiration and encouragement from these pages, and gratitude has now moved me to follow the Master's injunction form the book of Luke "Go, and do thou likewise."
In 1987 I was arrested on felony charges and was subsequently found guilty. I was sentenced to a term of ten to fifteen years in prison. During the prolonged period of time that I spent in the county jail awaiting trial, I took the opportunity to do much self-examination.
As most people do who have nowhere else to go, I turned to God. In my youth I had attended a Christian church regularly with my family, so it was to this early religious training that I turned. I spent a great deal of time in sincere, prayerful meditation, and some of the ideas and conclusions I came to about God, man, and the nature of evil were startling to me. Although the church I'd attended involved metaphysically based Christianity, the teachings did not quite satisfy me, and my understanding of spiritual things was largely unfocused.
