Four or five years ago I had a healing that showed me how important it is to "stand porter at the door of thought," as is stated in Science and Health. (Page 392 includes the full statement: "Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously.")

I had struck up a conversation with a man who was recuperating after having been operated on in both hips, and who had received new hip joints. A few days later I felt some pain in one of my hips; it felt as though it was not functioning properly. I realized I had accepted the need for a hip operation as mandatory in certain circumstances, instead of praying to understand this as the error that it was. One of the passages in Science and Health that helped me do this was: "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action" (p. 283). In one day the symptoms were gone as I prayed.

When I came up before a draft board, I was rejected because of organic heart disease. I refused to accept this diagnosis, and I began to pray for myself. Two years later I worked as assistant engineer on a ship. Though this was a physically demanding job, I did the work without fear, because I was convinced that my heart was normal. I never did have any aftereffects from that difficulty.
