Some years ago when our children were young, I was elected First Reader of my branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I held a very challenging job as an untenured university professor of chemistry at the time, and a review of my performance was pending in about a year. Life was busy and felt uncertain.

Then during a transcontinental business trip, I experienced the frightening symptoms of a heart attack. With the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, I was able to return home. But it became increasingly difficult to carry out my duties at work and church. Despite my prayers in Christian Science, my condition grew worse. I became bedridden and was forced to resign as First Reader and curtail much of my teaching. Eventually I had to stop teaching altogether and lost almost fifty pounds.

My family supported my decision to rely on Christian Science for healing. But I grew more depressed and frightened. A practitioner encouraged me to stop worrying about my perceived status as breadwinner and career man. I had to understand my true nature as the son of God, already complete and perfect.
