Going forward spiritually
You have resolved to go forward spiritually—to set aside more time for prayer. Perhaps you have determined to be more active in church work or to be more helpful to people in need. Or possibly you have made a commitment with yourself to complete a specific project—to gain more spiritual understanding of a particular topic through the study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Perhaps you've determined to heal a chronic difficulty through prayer or to write an article or testimony for this magazine. But as the days come and go, you find yourself occupied in the old routines, or making little headway with your endeavor in spite of sincere efforts, or faced with some new situation that claims to stand between you and the accomplishment of your goal.
You may ask, "What's going on here? What's working against my spiritual progress?" But it would be more productive to reverse that line of questioning and ask, "What's really going on here? What's working for my spiritual progress?"
First of all, you have the desire for spiritual growth. That is so important. It shows that you are listening to the voice of God speaking within your consciousness. It shows that God is present with you—as He is present with all of us at all times. And it shows that spiritual progress is God's will for you—as it is for all of us at all times. So, what is working for your spiritual development? God is! And what is working against it? Nothing that could possibly succeed without first overpowering God! And the provable message of Christian Science is that man's spiritual advancement is entirely safe in the hands of God, because His power is supreme.
