Service and substance
Learning more of God's nature reveals a whole new—and practical—view of economy.
Life is certainly more than just earning a living, as important as that is. The great opportunity of life is to serve God, which is profitable beyond measure. Humility and obedience to divine wisdom can crown life with a fearless security, for we are always safe in the service of God. Devotion to God has a healing effect, because worship of Him—the worship of Spirit—in thought and action aligns us with the divine power that strengthens and regenerates. It benefits us from every standpoint.
At age twelve, Jesus said to Mary and Joseph, "Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" He had just participated in an exchange of ideas with some church elders of his day that astonished many. And indeed, throughout his time on earth, Christ Jesus served his Father, God, by teaching and healing. He cured life-threatening illness, reformed sinners, even restored to life those who had died. Jesus proved the power of God to be greater than all other means or methods. He always realized spiritual profit from his efforts.
Our expression of the divine nature in service to God is foundational to progress in every aspect of our lives, including lasting economic stability. Spiritual-mindedness results in dividends that are rock solid and real. Each of us has the opportunity to follow Jesus in expressing the spiritual qualities that enable us to prove, at least in some degree, God's power and love.
