When I stopped at a fruit stand one day, the attendant said to me in a very kind manner, "Why don't you get a doctor to look at that place on your nose and get rid of it?" I had never seen the young man before, but I did appreciate his concern. I thanked him, assuring him that it was being taken care of. I was confident of healing, because many years earlier a growth in my throat had disappeared within a few weeks through my study of the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. At that time I had become clearly convinced that man is in reality spiritual, not material; that God is perfect eternally; and that man, as God's spiritual idea, reflects this unvarying goodness. This healing had occurred twenty or more years before and had been permanent.
Now again I found myself inspired to buckle down and pray more earnestly. I realized others were seeing a harmful growth on my face, and I knew that I must immediately deny this in my prayer and hold steadfastly to my spiritual perfection. Mrs. Eddy writes Science and Health, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." This method of prayer replaces unlovely concepts of the mortal mind with true spiritual understanding.
The basic fact that God is the divine Mind which heals spiritually became clearer to me than ever before when I began studying this paragraph from Science and Health: "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind."
