Christian Science has proved applicable to every facet of my life, from healing illness and improving personal relationships to guiding me and bringing progress in my career. In sports prayer has actually improved my ability to swim deeper and more powerfully, effectively removing fear that had held me back.
I'd like to describe how prayer in Christian Science helped me when I was windsurfing. I was in a particular part of San Francisco Bay where winds can become strong very suddenly. Once before, I had been blown far offshore in this same area and had to be rescued by a passing boat. This caused me to enroll in an advanced windsurfing class. Some weeks after this extra training, I set sail in medium-strength winds. Soon, however, the wind speed increased; the more I struggled to keep the sail aloft, the further offshore I drifted and the stronger the winds became.
These were the roughest conditions I'd ever faced. It appeared I would be blown far out into the bay, possibly with no rescue boat to help me. This time, rather than starting to signal for help, I reached out to God for assistance as the howling winds threatened to rip the sail out of my hands. The message that came to my thought was to "get radical." I remembered part of a reference from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." I was impelled to lean far back into the wind and way out from the board. I'd never done this before, and it felt like exactly the wrong thing to do, since I was now hanging very precariously over the water. Actually, it proved exactly the right thing to do, and I found myself moving faster than I ever had before toward the shore. This "radical" position actually allowed me to take full advantage of the strong winds.
