One of my first healings in Christian Science came after...
One of my first healings in Christian Science came after a car door closed accidentally on two of my fingers. I prayed and studied deeply "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It begins, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." At the time, I was serving as a pianist with an instrumental group. I'm happy to say that I was on hand for the next performance—entirely healed and grateful to perform my part.
Later I was offered a position teaching instrumental music in four public schools—a perfect opportunity to put into practice the spiritual truths I had been studying in Christian Science. It was at this time that I became aware of trouble with my eyesight. I asked for help through prayer from a Christian Science practitioner, and the healing came quickly. I rejoiced then and I rejoice now for clear vision.
This healing has helped me see more of God's creation expressed in all, as well as the importance of the reference to eyes in Science and Health as "spiritual discernment,—not material but mental."
Another healing, that of a hearing difficulty, took place gradually as I studied and prayed. These lines from a hymn in the Christian Science Hymnal were brought to my attention:
Come we daily then, dear Father,
Open hearts and willing hands,
Eager ears, expectant, joyful,
Ready for Thy right commands.
Considering these words brought a turning point for me because they told me what I needed to do—to listen, expecting God's guidance, and to accept it. I needed to be grateful every step of the way and, above all, to be ready to follow and put into practice God's commands. It was as plain as that, and it gave me plenty of employment.
One day I became aware of sounds I had not been able to hear for some time, such as traffic and other noises. The next morning during breakfast I recognized another sound I had not heard in a long time—my refrigerator!
I am thankful every day for the spiritual progress leading up to this healing, and for the love and patience of the practitioner who prayed for me at the time of these healings. I'm grateful, too, for all of the Christian Science periodicals, including The Christian Science Monitor.
