I had known for some time that something was wrong
I had known for some time that something was wrong. For months I had felt cut off from the decision-making process. Fellow employees were not dealing with me as part of the management group. I also knew that several bad decisions had been incorrectly attributed to me. In response, I had become defensive and more protective of my area of responsibility.
I appeared to have become not only the "fall guy," but the focus of general discontent within our management team. I had two other things going against me: I was young and I was a member of the family that owned the business. The president of the company felt threatened by me, and when other managers gave him information that was less than complete or accurate, he was inclined to believe them.
The situation grew worse. Finally the president called me to his office and told me that he thought I should consider a different line of work. The situation seemed about as bad as it could get.
