The overflowing gratitude I have for attending Christian Science Sunday Schools as a child is endless. And even though I drifted away from active involvement in a branch church for a number of years, these spiritual truths never stopped sustaining me: "God is love" (First John), "God is ... a very present help in trouble" (Psalms), and "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy), especially the last two sentences: "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."

Over the years, I have crewed on many large sailboats between California and Hawaii, along the Mexican coast, and through the South Pacific, and found all of the above to be true!

One time we ran aground in the main channel of Tahiti. There was much worry that we would lose the boat. The wheel had been left unattended, since we were aground and couldn't go anywhere. And at one point I was impelled to step to the helm, expecting God's goodness to be evident. After about ten minutes of claiming that God was truly in control, the 134-foot sailboat just slid off the coral bottom very gently. At the next island, some crew were sent overboard to examine the hull and found very little damage.
