Growing up in the 90s
"Honour thy father and thy mother"—always?
The summer after I graduated from high school I wanted very much to accept an invitation to do volunteer work for a social organization in a city in another state. I was still living at home then, and my dad was as opposed to this idea as I was for it! Our discussions about it ended in anger and tears. I loved my parents, who had always been very good to me. But I definitely did not want to listen to them at that point!
Having attended a Christian Science Sunday School since I was small, I knew the Ten Commandments well and took them seriously, but at a time like this, I felt the fifth one, "Honour thy father and thy mother...., "was impossible.
I knew that legally children are subject to their parents up to a certain age. Even Jesus, as a child, was subject to his parents under the laws of his day. So what could I do when my parent's opinion was different from mine?
