Having been raised a Christian Scientist, I have had a life full of wonderful evidence of God's power to meet every human need. I've had numerous healings, but there are several that have served as especially helpful lessons.

At one time I had a hernia and wore a truss. While working part time and going to graduate school, I prayed about this condition. One evening it became clear to me that I had been accepting that matter had the power to cause discord. That week's Bible Lesson included Christ Jesus' healing of the blind man. Jesus' disciples were curious as to why this man had been born blind. They asked, "Who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him" (John).

The realization that matter is not the cause that it seems to be and therefore could not have true control over me brought the inspiration and spiritualization of thought that I needed. It was evident to me that man's true identity is spiritually perfect and unchanged; the one Cause, man's real Parent, is God. As Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy states: "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being." Recognizing that Life, God, is the law of man's being, I knew I could rely on this law for health. I stopped using the truss; and the hernia was completely healed within the week.
