My first testimony, published in the Sentinel in 1975, related...

My first testimony, published in the Sentinel in 1975, related a landmark healing in my progress as a student of Christian Science. About two years later another experience proved equally valuable.

I had been a First Reader in my branch church for almost two and a half years when, for no apparent reason, I lost consciousness while conducting a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. My husband came immediately to my aid and I began to regain consciousness. Within minutes I felt well and could go to the foyer after the final hymn to greet and reassure those who had been present.

I believed the matter was closed but was astonished to find it had only begun. While I never felt faint again and never missed a service, I became increasingly fearful that this incident would recur. Although I had thoroughly enjoyed conducting services up until that time, I began to dread each service. I found myself glancing over the congregation, looking for any visitors, and realized that my basic fear was that I would faint in front of newcomers and leave a bad impression of Christian Science. I had always been somewhat disparaging of those who exhibited emotional illnesses, but I began to understand what it was like to feel trapped by unreasonable fear.
