"ABS Supplies Scriptures for Operation Desert Storm"

"Colonel Meredith R. Stanley, executive director of the U.S. Armed Forces Chaplains Board, contacted the American Bible Society (ABS) in early January, requesting that the ABS double the number of desert camouflage–covered Scriptures being produced for the military, says James Ray, ABS national field director. The Pentagon, he said, has asked for 50,000 Scriptures, in addition to the 50,000 Scriptures, in addition to the 50,000 it has already received....

"Mr. Ray explained how the first successful appeal came about. "Soon after our American forces arrived in Saudi Arabia, we began to receive inquiries from concerned relatives and friends who wanted to know what we were doing to make sure that our men and women over there had Scriptures with them...."

"Military officials arranged for the service men and women being deployed to receive the Scriptures. One regimental chaplain wrote that the Bibles sent to his group 'arrived just in time to make it into my fly–out gear....'
