At various times in my early childhood I attended a Christian Science Sunday School, and I can remember being impressed with the love, dedication, and tenderness of my teachers. I didn't realize at the time that the knowledge of God's care that I gained there would remain with me into my adult years.
In the early 1960s, I was locked into an abusive marriage. I was very naive and young, and I believed that the repeated beatings were not necessarily abnormal. We had four young children, and I wanted to be a good mother and wife; I found myself trying to "make the best of a bad situation." My life was in shambles, and I was hospitalized several times with broken bones. I was too ashamed to tell my family or the doctors what the situation was at home.
I was given heavy doses of tranquilizers and other medicine to combat what was medically diagnosed as depression. I was soon abusing the prescription drugs and using alcohol as an escape to dull my feelings and hide from my troubles.
