Some Christian Science literature was left in my father's gas station one day by a member of a local branch church, and my father brought it home where he disposed of it in the trash. My mother, finding the literature and wanting something to read, retrieved it and as a result began her life anew. Shortly after, she began attending the local branch church and enrolled my brother and me in the Christian Science Sunday School.
The first healing I can remember took place after I had stepped on a fishing hook and the barb went completely into my foot. My mother asked me how I wanted to handle the situation. I made my choice and called a Christian Science practitioner, who said she would pray for me. I remember feeling no pain whatsoever. I do not remember exactly how long the hook was in my foot, but I remember that it fell out, leaving no mark.
When I reached my teenage years, I behaved as the prodigal son did in one of Christ Jesus' parables and "wasted [my] substance with riotous living." During those years I indulged in illegal drugs, drank, and smoked. I married quite young and had a child, all the while continuing with the habits mentioned above. During this time I occasionally called a practitioner for help.
