In the summer of 1990, at the start of a vacation trip, I severely strained a muscle in my leg. I was barely able to stand, let alone walk. I was with other Christian Scientists when the injury occurred, and they were comforting in their comments. They helped me overcome fear and acknowledge God's ever-presence and sustaining care of His spiritual idea, man.

Later that day I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to give me treatment through prayer. She reminded me of these words in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Mind is the source of all movement." (The complete statement reads: "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action.")

To me this passage meant that in reality my movement was not actually dependent on legs and muscles, since strength and mobility have their source in God, Mind. I also acknowledged that the one Mind is forever directing and governing man. The latter realization was particularly relevant to me, because I had recently made a career change and was thinking about new directions in my life.
