What Richie found out
Richie lived in Hawaii, where it was almost always warm and sunny. In his backyard, Richie played under huge palm trees and among the flowered bushes. He watched bright tropical birds dart in and out. Every morning he helped his mother scatter birdseed on the patio for several families of Brazilian cardinals. They were gray and white with red tops. The babies had brownish tops.
Richie played football and climbed trees with two good friends. Sometimes they brought their trucks and cars over. They made dirt roads and hills to run them on. When he was alone, Richie spent hours playing with his cars.
One day while Richie was playing in the dirt, some red fire ants stung him. His hand and arm hurt and quickly puffed up. Richie was frightened and began to cry.
