In 1940, after he had consulted two doctors, my husband...
In 1940, after he had consulted two doctors, my husband felt his life was in danger. He was suffering from stomach ulcers and growing worse by the day. At the time, we were living in a small town in Alabama. In our extremity we thought of my aunt in Indiana, who was a Christian Science practitioner. We knew she had been healed of tuberculosis through Christian Science. I wrote to her, requesting help through prayer, and her reply to my letter was immediate.
She agreed to help and suggested we read Psalm 91 from the Bible and page 475 of Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy's answer to the question "What is man?" begins. My aunt also recommended we study other references. (She had previously given me a copy of Science and Health, which I had put aside for future reading.)
I read these passages to my husband and continued with the care of our two small children. That evening my husband asked me to read to him again, so I read the same things and then some other pages that looked interesting. He went to sleep, and for the first time in a long while he slept peacefully all night.
