During my business career of many years, I held half a dozen positions. While two of them were for periods of seventeen and twenty-three years respectively, the expiry of these jobs was never of my own choosing but a decision of management. A feeling of failure was dominant in my evaluation of myself. Within recent years, a new position which I enjoyed tremendously was terminated. Again, I felt the welling up of discouragement, a recurring sense of lack of my own worth.

In the long view of my life, although I had been brought up in Christian Science, I had not desired to become a church member. My healing of a lame hip, which came with the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, changed my thinking. I gained a new understanding and appreciation of Church from the way Mrs. Eddy describes Church in Science and Health. After attending branch church services regularly, I joined both the Mother Church and a local branch church. In the latter I was asked to serve on a committee and shortly to be chairman of that committee. As I eagerly carried out my duties together with the other members, I felt nurtured by the love they showered on me.

One evening, as I was preparing the church for a business meeting, I was asked to take on some additional duties not generally assigned to my group. The healing thought came to me, "I am necessary; I am needed!" At that point I suddently realized I was free of the heavy weight of self-depreciation.
