My parents became interested in Christian Science shortly before I was born. While I was growing up I was taught at home and in the Christian Science Sunday School that God did not create disease and that His child expresses health and wholeness derived from Him. Consequently, there were few instances of illness and my health was good. During all the years of school and through college, I missed very little school because of illness.
When I was about twelve, two of my fingers were smashed by a heavy rock I was carrying to help my father with some yardwork. Through my mother's prayers, the healing came readily, and in a couple of weeks the skin was healed and new nails had come out. The injuries and bruises I incurred as a youngster were always healed quickly through my mother's prayerful help.
During the five years I spent in the United States Army during the Second World War, I learned to work out problems through the continuing study and practice of Christian Science. I had many wonderful experiences of protection and other opportunities to learn more of God's constant presence and His omnipotence.
