Early in my freshman year of college I noticed a small bump...

Early in my freshman year of college I noticed a small bump on the knuckle of one of my fingers. At first I thought it was just some sort of cut that was healing slowly. But weeks went by and it remained. I prayed about it in a cursory way but didn't really give it much thought, prayerful or otherwise. Then it began to grow more noticeable; it became sore and red and soon covered the whole knuckle.

People at college began to notice it and express concern. They told me I had better do something about it because it could be serious. I assured them I was doing something. I continued to pray as I had been taught to do in Christian Science, but I must admit that at that point I was praying merely to get rid of a bump on my finger. So, not surprisingly, my prayers didn't seem very effective.

The following summer I was to take class instruction with a teacher of Christian Science. I thought, "Well, that ought to heal it! I'll learn some special way to pray and presto!" I certainly learned a lot during those two weeks, mainly that Christian Science treatment isn't about changing, fixing, or simply healing matter. The basis of Christian Science is the allness of God, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.
