It is time that I acknowledge in writing the blessings that have come to me through the study and practice of Christian Science. For many years the most valued thing in my life has been membership in The Mother Church and various branch churches at different times. This was not always the case.
For a time, though I had enjoyed the healing benefits of Christian Science from birth, I had no desire to join a church. In fact, I had come to feel that membership would restrict my freedom to study Science in my own way. Then, when I was in my early twenties, I had an attack of a painful and crippling condition in my neck and shoulders. The condition did not yield to what I realize now was a purely intellectual approach to healing through prayer.
I had recently met a church member, a Christian Science practitioner, whose gentle, loving manner appealed to me. In tears I telephoned her in the middle of the night and poured out my troubles. She spoke gently to me, and the pain turned off like a water faucet.
