I first heard of Christian Science when an aunt visited my family in southern Ohio many years ago. We children were told that Aunt Clara (a Christian Scientist) did not believe in being sick. We thought this amusing. But later, when I was in great need, I changed my view.
In my first year as a teacher, I was afflicted with what the doctors diagnosed as inflammatory rheumatism. Three doctors told me I would never walk again. This was deeply discouraging. I was boarding at the home of a couple who were Christian Scientists, and the wife asked me if I would turn to God for help. I thought of Aunt Clara and said "Yes." I was willing to try anything.
