One Saturday in the spring of 1986, while I was driving to pick up an assistant, I began to experience a pain in one side of my back. We reached the site of our work, which is isolated and a few miles from my home. The pain was such that I could not stand upright. I attempted to pray but was unable to continue working. As the assistant could not drive, I left him in charge of the work, got my car (which was parked a few feet away), and drove home.
When I arrived, I went immediately to bed and asked my wife to call a Christian Science practitioner for me, as I felt unable to speak on the telephone. The practitioner began to pray for me. Because I could not sleep for more than a short while at a time, I had plenty of opportunities to pray for myself as well.
Through my wife, the practitioner relayed to me some spiritual truths to ponder, and I clung to these. I struggled to gain a clear sense of my true being as a child of God, which includes no disease, no pain. An imposition which the practitioner and my wife also helped me dispel was that of burden. I had been feeling anxiety concerning my tasks, which were many.
