An experience I had a few years ago taught me the importance of specifically dealing with fear when a physical healing is needed. One needs to be completely honest so that his fear can be identified and overcome thoroughly and quickly.

One evening while bending over to pick up something, I hit my head on a bureau and cut my forehead. The cut appeared quite deep. Because I have experienced many complete and quick healings by relying exclusively on Christian Science treatment, I decided to handle the situation through prayer. My husband called a Christian Science practitioner for me, and as I talked with her I realized that though I wasn't experiencing any pain, I felt overwhelmed by fear that the cut would leave a scar.

I found I needed to pray almost constantly during the next two days to keep from being fearful. The support of the practitioner was invaluable in helping me do this, as was my study of the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy. One sentence of hers in Science and Health particularly helped me keep everything in proper perspective (p. 197): "We should master fear, instead of cultivating it." This thought proved especially helpful when I was tempted to look at the cut to see if it was healing or if there would be a scar. The statement provided the inspiration necessary to lift my thought above looking to the material condition for true progress, which is spiritual. Before a week had passed, a scab formed and fell off, leaving a very thin line that was barely noticeable.
