In my late teens and in college, I investigated a number of religions and came to the conclusion that if there was a God, He was unknowable. The philosophy classes I had taken showed mankind's futile attempts to prove the existence of God on the basis of human reason and logic, and led me to investigate hallucinogenic drugs as a way of finding some deeper meaning in life. Instead I found myself physically and "psychologically" hooked on these drugs.

I wound up in jail, serving a thirty-day sentence on a drug conviction. After I was released I returned to the university where I was enrolled as a student. I had been heavily involved in the use of marijuana, LSD, and cocaine, and quickly found myself slipping back into the same pattern despite the promise I had made to myself in jail that I would "go straight" when I got out.

At that point I was introduced to Christian Science through a young woman I met on campus. She intrigued me because she had such a different and positive philosophy of life, and we had a number of conversations about her religion. In our conversations I must admit that I tried my best to convince her that she was out of touch with reality, but in retrospect it was clearly the other way around.
