"Wherever you go today, increasing numbers of thoughtful men and women are questioning the assumption that ours is—or should be—a 'secular' world. More and more, they are asking the 'first principle' questions, questions that are religious in character and often religious in content. Contrary to some secularist theories, religion is not withering away, nor can it be confined to the so-called private sphere of living.

"In jurisprudence, for the first time in generations, distinguished figures express concern that the law can command figures express concern that the law can command neither force nor legitimacy unless it acknowledges a higher authority, an authority that is essentially religious.

"In universities and research centers, more and more scholars are now saying that the science may ultimately be unproductive and even perilous when divorced from our religious and mortal traditions."
