Something special about an elder

She carried her years with unpretentious dignity and grace, as one who had been long accustomed to the discipline of Christian Science practice. Experience had endowed her with spiritual understanding and with a kind wisdom that enabled her to bring out in others the desire and ability to serve God.

I knew her for only about six years when I was a young woman. And yet her unselfish efforts to shepherd my spiritual growth made a profound change in me and gave a constructive direction to my life that continues to mold my character. She was my across-the-street neighbor, the practitioner with whom I shared an office, and my Christian Science teacher.

For the answers to my questions, she constantly turned me to the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, and she labored to help me fulfill my yearning to write for the Christian Science periodicals. A prolific writer herself, whose publications in these volumes span about forty years, she encouraged me in such a tender and moving way that I began at once to devote regular hours daily to writing lest I lose the vision and guidance she was sharing with me so generously.
