In the early 1920s my mother was given a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. Mother was very interested in what she read, but because she was a devoted member of another church, she didn't pursue further study of Christian Science at that time.

Some years later Mother's arm became paralyzed, and she suffered from continual pain despite medical attention. When the doctors sadly told her there was nothing more they could do for her, she wrote to the nearest Christian Science practitioner, who lived a hundred and twenty miles away, and asked for help through prayer. This help, which was given gladly, resulted in a very quick, complete healing. My mother was so grateful and so impressed by this healing that she began to study this Science. Later she left the church she'd belonged to for years, so that she could join The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

I am so grateful that when I left home a few years after this, my mother gave me a Bible, a copy of Science and Health, and a Christian Science Quarterly. She suggested that I read one section of the Bible Lesson outlined in the Quarterly first thing each morning. This I did, though I was not particularly interested in Science at the time.
