Hold to joy
My first Christian Science healing happened during the winter of seventh grade. I had spent the previous summer sick in bed, and I was fed up with being sick. I wanted to go to the Christian Science Sunday School because when I had gone there during first grade I liked it. What I remembered from those few months was that Christian Scientists heal through prayer and understanding of God. I remembered from the Bible some of the healings of Christ Jesus and his disciples.
Another thing I began to learn then was about my relationship to God. He was my Father—my true Parent—and as His child I was spiritual, perfect. I learned that Jesus was able to heal because he knew his Father—our Father—has all power and glory. In Sunday School I found out that we could trust God to heal us, too. That's what Jesus expected us to do.
Even though my parents weren't interested, they were happy to let me try Christian Science. In fact, I enrolled in the Sunday School, and my dad drove me there every Sunday morning until I had a driver's license and could drive myself. And my parents didn't object when I began to rely on Christian Science for healing rather than take the medication I'd been used to.
