Christian Science came into my life when I was in high school
Christian Science came into my life when I was in high school. A world history teacher, whom I greatly respected, had a subscription to The Christian Science Monitor and referred us to the paper for its in-depth reports on different parts of the world. This was my introduction to Science.
In college I met a student who became a good friend. She was a Christian Scientist. There was a special poise about her, yet she was always full of life—and never sick. Later when I was ill with a serious infection I called her to complain. "The doctors," I said, "have told me to make friends with this illness." She surprised me by saying, "If you get tired and want to be rid of it, come to me." Although I didn't know how to pray scientifically for myself then, her confidence that I could be rid of the problem opened a wholly new way of thinking for me. I decided to discard the medicine, and soon the infection was completely gone. Her clear, silent realization that God and His child are always perfect had healed me on the spot.
When I was pregnant with my second child I began to study Christian Science in earnest. I wanted to understand what my friend knew. As a result, the birth of our son was free of all medication and a total joy. There have been subsequent healings of earaches, influenza, fever, and an undiagnosed skin disease, as well as a gradual improvement in my temperament—all from my learning more and more of God.
