Ideals—illusive or real?
When Christ Jesus might have expected some human comfort and support in the garden of Gethsemane, he instead found his disciples sleeping. He asked this telling question: "Could ye not watch with me one hour?" Matt. 26:40. Mrs. Eddy comments on this passage: "There was no response to that human yearning, and so Jesus turned forever away from earth to heaven, from sense to Soul." Science and Health, p. 48.
We need to begin to follow the Master's example. And our turning away—however slightly—from dependence on earthly ties and treasures (often so fragile and undependable) to divine Love (the source of real happiness and contentment) is proof of our progress Spiritward. It shows we are gaining a maturer insight into what Christian Science teaches us is our actual being as the spiritual child of God. This turning refreshes our hearts, and we gain more divine views of reality.
As a verse from a loved hymn puts it:
