I was raised in Christian Science, and I have...

I was raised in Christian Science, and I have relied on God for healing throughout my life. I attended a Christian Science Sunday School until I was twenty.

When I was five years old I became very ill and couldn't get out of bed. A doctor was called to the house because my mother believed the condition might be considered contagious. After I was examined, the doctor told my parents that I had polio, and that there was nothing he could do for me. He also told my parents that if I ever did get well, I would never walk without metal supports on my legs and that one leg would be smaller than the other. When the doctor had left, my mother called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me.

"The scientific statement of being" on page 468 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy was studied a great deal in the days that followed. Also we found the twenty-third Psalm from the Bible very comforting, especially the fourth verse in which to me the word walk stood out: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." My parents knew that an understanding of God was the rod and staff I could lean upon and, therefore, that no material support would be needed.
