A rewarding priority
A newcomer to Christian Science blithely announced to her family one evening, "Tomorrow I'm going to keep the First Commandment for five minutes."
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Ex. 20:3. Simple, she thought. Next morning, however, things began to happen.
Her husband—always the first to wake up and the one upon whom the others in the household depended to waken them—overslept. (This had never happened before, nor has it since.) Everybody wanted to use the bathroom at once; toast burned; milk boiled over; shoelaces broke. There was no volcanic outburst, but irritation was slowly coming to a boil. Finally the family poured out of the house to the car—only to find it had a flat tire, and a flat spare.
