Honest searchers for Truth

In a recent discussion on religion that I had with an earnest Christian who is a member of a Protestant church, my friend remarked, "One has to be pretty intelligent to understand Christian Science." Thinking about this remark afterward, I realized that of course it is not correct to assume that only a certain category of people can understand and utilize the teachings of Christian Science. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "No intellectual proficiency is requisite in the learner, but sound morals are most desirable." Science and Health, p. x.

Moral regeneration is an essential element in a progressive study of the Science of Christianity. Great importance is placed on the teachings and works of Christ Jesus and on the priceless contributions made in support of morality and spiritual regeneration by the great spiritually-minded figures in the Scriptures.

As the basis of right human conduct under the government of divine justice, Moses set down the moral law in the form of the Ten Commandments, which he received from God on Mount Sinai. Jesus reaffirms the great importance of the moral law in his Sermon on the Mount, declaring: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." Matt. 5:17, 18.
