Healing adulterous longings

[Name withheld by request]

Christian Science gives us an understanding of divine Love's true affection that enables us to overcome adulterous longings and unhealthy relationships. I proved this when, after my husband passed away, I fell in love with someone who was married.

My married friend and I felt we had been denied human affection over a period of years. We agreed, however, to have no physical intimacy, and we never did. But the mental anguish was devastating to my peace, joy, and health. And our Master, Christ Jesus, makes plain that mental adultery is as much a sin as physical adultery. See Matt. 5:27, 28 .

To meet the aggressive belief of love as coming from two finite minds, I turned to God as the only source of intelligence, the only real Mind. There being only one Mind, the communication of loving thoughts could only be from God to man, man reflecting this divine Mind. Like sunbeams all expressing the warmth and light of the sun, we are each in reality Love's reflection, in consonance with God's absolute nature. This unity of Love and its reflection, man, finds natural human expression in lovingkindness, unselfishness, purity. But because true love comes from God, divine Principle, it always uplifts rather than degrades. To find a better sense of love, however, we must look beyond the limitations of strictly personal attachment.
