One afternoon during the time that I was nursing our youngest child, I developed symptoms of what might be called a breast infection. I experienced pain and a high fever, and the breast soon became so tender that nursing was virtually impossible. Fear gripped me; I felt too weak to care for our three children, yet my husband was not due home for several hours. At that point I knew that I had to turn thought completely to God.
I called a Christian Science practitioner to assist me through prayer, and she lovingly agreed to help. Then I hung up the phone, praying for God's guidance. Immediately the hymn "'Feed My Sheep,'" with words by Mrs. Eddy, came to mind. I got my copy of the Christian Science Hymnal, turned to No. 304, and prayerfully pondered each line of that hymn.
The first verse begins:
