Before my marriage I shared a flat with two other young women. They were not students of Christian Science. There was an epidemic of influenza in the city, and I went to help a family who had come under this condition. I stayed with them until my help was no longer needed. As I was returning home I thought how pleased my flat mates would be to see me back. Much to my surprise, the reception I received was decidedly cool. I soon learned that they were resentful because they were afraid I had brought influenza back with me and that we would all be ill.
That night on going to bed I manifested the symptoms of influenza. I prayed earnestly, declaring that I could not be penalized for helping others, and affirming that my true nature is spiritual and perfect. I asserted that divine Love knows nothing about influenza, for there is no disease in God's kingdom. I prayed, slept, woke, and prayed again, all through the night.
By morning I felt considerably better. I got up as usual, ready to do all the things I had planned for that day. However, as I was dressing I could smell bacon and eggs being fried in the kitchen, and the smell sickened me. I felt I just could not sit down and watch my flat mates eat breakfast, let alone eat it myself. Then I said very firmly to myself, "You have declared that there is no such thing as influenza, that you are not really ill; now you must prove it." I said nothing to the others but sat down and ate breakfast as usual, and that was the end of the trouble. Not only had I been completely healed, but my friends were protected too. Neither of them contracted the flu.
