A gentle presence
My first healing through trusting God came before I knew anything about Christian Science.
I was nine years old at the time. Other than the influence of my parents' great love for the Bible, I had very little religious training. I did go to church regularly, but my real interest was singing in the choir. One thing I also liked was a colorful book of Bible stories that I read over and over again. I didn't know whether they were true or not. What mattered to me was that they were very good stories.
One evening right after dinner, my mother sent me to a neighborhood grocery store a block away to pick up a loaf of bread. It was already dark, and as I came out of the store, I misjudged the first step. Down I went, falling to the bottom in a heap. Nobody was around, and for a while I lay at the bottom of the stairs in excruciating pain, trying to catch my breath.
