Before I came into Christian Science I was suffering from nervousness...
Before I came into Christian Science I was suffering from nervousness, and medical aid had failed to help me. I had attended services at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, several times, and one night at home after much suffering and restlessness, I decided to look to God for my help. I got out of bed, sat down, picked up my copy of the Bible, and prayed to God to lead me to the truth. When I opened the Bible, right before my eyes was this verse (Ps. 121:2): "My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth." This was my answer.
That night I disposed of all the medicine, and early the next morning I called a Christian Science practitioner to ask her to pray for me. After I'd related my situation, she helped me see that I was suffering from fear. Then suddenly I felt relaxed, free, peaceful, and had love in my heart for everyone. This sense of inspiration was surely something I had been searching for; without a doubt, Christian Science was the truth.
I started reading Christian Science literature and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Page 1 of this book includes the following statement: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." I gave the words "absolute faith," "spiritual understanding," and "unselfed love" much study. The Concordance to Science and Health was most useful.
I learned that man has no selfhood apart from God, for "in him we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17:28). It was such a blessing to realize that I had always been God's child, that I was "hid with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3). Knowing this was the truth set me free from many false beliefs. Within a short time I was healed. I joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and a branch church where I have worked on various committees, and served as organist, Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School superintendent.
For leading me to the truth of Christian Science and for the loving practitioner, who was most helpful in a time of great need, I will always be grateful to God.
