I first began to study Christian Science in 1919 when I was ten years old. At that time I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School in California. Previously, my family had lived on a ranch in western Wyoming, far from any church. However, my mother was a lifelong Christian Scientist. And before she was born her own mother had been healed through Christian Science of heart trouble.

I was receptive to what I learned in Sunday School of God as Love, "a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). After I entered the sixth grade, I did well in all my studies except English. At times we were required to take turns standing before the class to give a personal experience in a well-organized, interesting report. I was very shy, and I had come from a one-room school of about four pupils to a city school with close to forty pupils in one room of the sixth grade. But what I had learned of God as "a very present help" gave me the courage to stand before the class, and my reports soon improved.

Later, during my four years in college, I prayed concerning supply. (My father, who was not a Christian Scientist, was unable to support my education financially because of failing health.) My mother joined me in praying for guidance. I was able to find work during the summers and during the school years as well. In fact, because of our trust in God, all of my three sisters, who also attended the Christian Science Sunday School, were able to attend college.
