While I was still a baby, my mother suffered blood poisoning...
While I was still a baby, my mother suffered blood poisoning and was facing an amputation, when she was healed through the prayer of a Christian Science practitioner. (A relative had encouraged my mother to seek help in Christian Science.) As I grew up I learned of this healing, and it made a deep impression on me. However, we did not live near a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, so as a teen-ager I was active in a local church of another denomination. Later, after I had married, my husband and I became active Christian Scientists.
One day one of our children was crossing an intersection on her way home from school when she was struck by a car and thrown onto the highway. Witnesses wanted to take her to the hospital, but she asked to be taken home. (She was only six at the time.) When she was brought to me and I had been told what had happened, my daughter quoted this sentence from Science and Health (p. 473): "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power." (She had learned this statement in the Christian Science Sunday School.) And she added, "And Mommy, I know'd it too!" The child had been unharmed, except for minor bruises, which quickly healed.
More recently, there was an estrangement in our family. Although we prayed sincerely to resolve this difficulty, it wasn't healed quickly. Still, we persisted in cherishing the concept of the universal family of God, and finally the healing came. The mutual love and respect that are now expressed in our family are certainly evidence of our all-loving Father-Mother God. How can we help loving Him?
