Hopeless situations or spiritual paths?

"This situation is hopeless!" That's how I felt several years ago when I was appointed headmaster of a once prestigious boarding school that had fallen on hard times. The moral fiber of the school, like its enrollment, stood at an all-time low. Indebtedness soared. Both the school's former supporters and the educational world itself had turned their backs on the institution. Its demise looked imminent. The situation appeared hopeless indeed.

Years of experience as a student of Christian Science, however, had taught me otherwise. I realized there was a path of spiritual discovery that would not only heal the school's difficulties but also prove that spiritual laws are always at hand to help and to save. Viewed in this light, what appeared to be a hopeless situation became an opportunity, not a calamity. It was an opportunity to grow in my understanding of substance and supply, to discover more of the spiritual meaning of resurrection, and to express man's inviolable dominion as God's beloved child.

The school which I had been called upon to head was also blessed immeasurably by these truths, these spiritual laws. Today it is sound and strong, free of debt, and overflowing with applicants. It is actively engaged in fulfilling its purpose. None of this was a personal accomplishment. Trustees and parents, pupils and alumni, faculty and neighbors, all played their part.
